A place in the Hilpert family

Friedrich was the brother of David, Christel, August, Ernst. This relationship is recorded here from information supplied by the family.

His letters and the church records bring a working family into view: children growing up in Poplitz, losses at home, and relatives keeping in touch across the Atlantic.

Work, loss and news from the children

Writing from Poplitz on February 17, probably in 1877, Friedrich looked back on twenty years of work on the manor estate. His letter mourns four children who had died and describes three surviving sons: Eduard [reading provisional], serving as a Feldwebel; Karl, married in Alsleben; and Franz, in Magdeburg. The letter’s date and some names remain provisional.

In November 1880, Carl wrote from Beesenlaublingen after his father’s death. His mother was still at Poplitz. The letters preserve the family’s own grief and desire for news; the records below help connect that account to particular people and dates.

In the family’s own words

Friedrich asks to be remembered

The letters report Friedrich leasing August’s field, later living in Alsleben, and writing from Poplitz to his sister. His own letter mourns family losses; Carl’s later letter, supported by a historical annotation, reports his father’s death.

From Wiehe to Poplitz

Church records now give a much stronger connection between the Wiehe family and the Friedrich who wrote from Poplitz. Johann Friedrich Hilpert was born in Wiehe on May 11, 1826, to Johann Gottlieb Hilpert and Hanna Christiana, whose birth surname appears as a Knau- variant. He married Johanne Christiane Burkhardt on January 18, 1850. Her recorded birth date is March 26, 1823: 1850 is the marriage year, not her birth year.

Their children include Carl Friedrich, born May 20, 1850, and Karl Franz, born July 19, 1852. Later confirmation entries record Carl Friedrich and Carl Franz at Poplitz, with ages fitting these births and their father described as a worker. The records give the family a place in the community where Friedrich later wrote to his sister.

The 1880 burial entry is especially persuasive. Friedrich Hilpert of Poplitz died on May 26, aged 54 years and 15 days. That age calculates to May 11, 1826, exactly matching the Wiehe birth date. Place, year and cause of death—stroke—also agree with the broad account in Carl’s letter. These connections substantially strengthen the identification, although discrepancies remain.

What remains uncertain

The widow’s given name in the burial entry appears different from Johanne Christiane in the marriage entry; Burkhardt is a provisional reading of a correction. Carl’s letter gives May 28 rather than May 26 and describes himself as thirty-one and the second son; the Wiehe Carl would have been thirty, while Franz’s baptism may call him the second son. The burial appears to mention two adult children, whereas Friedrich’s earlier letter mentions three surviving sons. No intervening death has been established, and Eduard’s identity remains unresolved.

The marriage-place reading formerly given as Alsleben was withdrawn; it appears to be Oldisleben, still uncertain. Charlotte and Christiane in the maternal records must not yet be treated as the same woman.

Selected fields: Friedrich Hilpert; Poplitz; age 54 years, 0 months, 15 days. Died May 26, 1880, at 10 p.m.; buried May 29 [reading provisional]. Cause of death: stroke (Schlagfluß).

The widow’s name appears to read Mina or Minna Christiane, with Burkhardt inserted above a correction. The entry appears to mention two adult children.

This is a translation of selected fields, not the entire spread. The widow’s given name, child count and burial-date reading need further verification. The occupation is not securely read. The death date differs from May 28 in the current reading of Carl’s letter.
