A childhood in Tjølling

Alf was born on January 11, 1918, while Olaus and Marie lived at Østre Halsen in Tjølling. He was baptized on May 20. His later marriage and death records repeat the same birthday.

In the 1920 census he was at Skjønheim 3, Strømm, with both parents and sisters Alfhild, Ruth and Ragna. His father’s work as a smith is part of the family’s documented working life; Alf’s own later occupation was workshop worker.

An October wedding in Sandefjord

On October 18, 1941, Alf married Rønnaug Mildred Holm. The Sandefjord marriage register gives his exact birthday, Tjølling birthplace and father, smith Olaus Johnsen, firmly connecting the adult groom to his childhood records.

Alf was a workshop worker living in Sandar. Rønnaug lived at Schanches gate 1 in Sandefjord; the newspaper announced that their wedding would take place there that day. Her birthday was December 1, 1920, at Skogn, and the register names her father as police officer Egil Gunstein Fridgeir Holm. The record’s spelling Mildred is retained here.

The family-held notice for Olaus later names “Alf and Rønnaug Johnsen” among his children and children-in-law, another record of the couple’s place in the family.

The names around Alf

Alf’s death notice begins with his wife Rønnaug and describes him as husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law and uncle. Beneath her name are five pairs:

  • Ingrid and Roger
  • Bjørg and Johan Arnt
  • Elsa and Leif Gunnar
  • Randi and Olav
  • Hilde and Arne

The layout strongly suggests daughters in the left column and their partners in the right. The notice does not explicitly label those columns, so the interpretation is kept visible. Complete names and exact parentage need their own records. Grandchildren are mentioned together, without names or a count.

A farewell in 1983

Alf died on August 22, 1983, aged sixty-five. The official record gives Sandefjord as his residence municipality. His family announced a funeral from Sandar chapel on August 26 at 1:30 p.m.; a report published on August 29 confirms that the funeral and interment had taken place.

The funeral report mentions a wreath from Jahres Fabrikker A/S. That is a possible lead about his working life, but it does not establish his employer, job or years of service. The reviewed records also do not identify a precise grave.

Rønnaug lived until July 20, 2007. Her official death record repeats the birthday in the marriage register and gives Sandefjord as her residence. Their names remain linked in the marriage record and the family’s farewells.
