Karl Fredrik Harjo

Karl Fredrik Harjo was born at Masjok in Tana on 22 January 1906, the son of Johan Ludvig Harjo and Anna, whose name appears in records as Anna Karina or Katrine Børresen. His parish entry records a home baptism on 31 January 1906, confirmed in church on 15 September 1907. [1]

The 1910 census places Karl at Larsnes with his mother, siblings and Petter Barski. By 1920 he was living at Øvre Brasmo in Nesseby, recorded as the foster son of Alfret and Hilma Abrahamsen. His church certificate records confirmation at Nesseby on 7 November 1920. The circumstances of his move remain unknown. [2]

Karl’s papers document work on deck and in the engine room. His driving licence names him Karl Fredrik Ludvigsen Harjo, linking the surname in his seafaring records with the name known to his family. Three vessels are securely named in his surviving service papers. [4]

Marriage notices in 1937 identify Karl as a laborer in Kirkenes and Gunvor Malnes as his intended wife. Their wedding was announced for 21 August. Later estate records confirm their marriage. Their three children were Anne Lise, Gunnar Fredrik and Margrethe. [6]

A deed dated 26 May 1944 records Karl’s purchase of Larsnes from Petter Barski through Petter’s guardian. It explicitly describes Karl as the son of the seller’s deceased wife and states that his mother had brought the property into the estate. A later endorsement records that all the buildings were burned by the Germans in autumn 1944. [7]

After the war, Karl’s skill with machinery appears in a letter from Tana Jordstyre dated 16 February 1946. It describes Fredrik as Tana’s most skilled tractor driver and recommends arrangements for him to buy a tractor. The letter is a recommendation, not proof that the proposed purchase was completed. A September 1948 newspaper report describes a smallholder named Fredrik Harjo at Masjok suffering internal injuries when a board struck him while sawing. The name, place and circumstances make this a probable identification. It does not establish that the injury caused his death five years later. [9]

Karl died on 25 September 1953, aged forty-seven. His death notice and estate records agree on the date. His exact place and medical cause of death remain unresolved. [10]

A letter from Masjok dated 2 August 1953 addresses Fredrik in hospital and offers help to his family. It establishes hospitalization but gives neither the hospital’s name nor a diagnosis. The signature appears to read Gustav; that reading is still provisional. [11]

On 28 September 1953, Kristian wrote to Gunvor from Staten Island after learning of his brother’s death from Signe. He expressed regret at not having written to Fredrik and concern for Gunvor, the farm and her three children. The letter preserves a brother’s grief alongside the formal death and estate records. Decades later, Gunnar shared memories of his father’s childhood with Hans’s grandchild. A family visit to Tana, Masjok and Båtsfjord in 2025, made with sister Alisa, brought the next generations back to these places.
